Missiles and Drones Kill Nine in Kyiv Before NATO Summit

In a severe escalation of hostilities, Russia executed a substantial missile and drone assault on Kyiv early Monday, resulting in at least nine fatalities and injuring 46 individuals, including five children, as reported by Ukrainian officials. Emergency personnel continue to conduct rescue operations, with authorities cautioning that the number of casualties may increase.

The attack inflicted significant damage on residential structures throughout the Ukrainian capital, with emergency services confirming that 15 apartment buildings were either damaged or destroyed. Among the affected sites was a nine-story residential building in Kyiv’s Podilskyi district, where rescue teams are currently engaged in efforts to save individuals trapped beneath the debris. Additionally, one fatality was confirmed in the Bucha district, located northwest of Kyiv.

Russia’s Defense Ministry acknowledged the execution of what it termed a “massive” strike, utilizing long-range missiles and drones. The Ministry claimed that the targets of this operation included military, energy, and airfield infrastructure within Kyiv and several other regions across Ukraine.

This recent assault follows closely on the heels of another significant Russian attack that resulted in the deaths of at least 27 individuals in Kyiv, marking it as one of the most lethal incidents in the city this year. These strikes underscore the ongoing and escalating conflict in the region.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the ongoing combat near the strategic town of Kostyantynivka in the Donetsk region, dismissing Russian assertions that the town has been seized. The situation remains tense as both sides continue to engage in intense military operations.
