Mississippi regulators have officially authorized Elon Musk’s xAI to expand its on-site power generation with 41 methane gas turbines. The permit was granted by the MDEQ on Tuesday, following a period of intense public debate and resident opposition. The facility, known as Colossus 2, provides the energy necessary for xAI’s massive artificial intelligence supercomputers.
The 41 turbines are essential for training the latest versions of Grok, xAI’s signature artificial intelligence software. These chips require a constant and immense amount of electricity that the local power grid is currently unable to provide. By creating its own “behind-the-meter” power source, xAI can maintain its aggressive development schedule.
Local activists and the NAACP have expressed “deep disappointment” with the decision, claiming the state ignored valid health concerns. Residents of Southaven have reported that the noise from the turbines is constant and that air quality has noticeably declined. The NAACP has accused the state agency of prioritizing the “convenience” of a billionaire over the safety of its citizens.
The environmental footprint of the turbines is a major point of contention, as they release significant amounts of nitrogen oxide. This pollutant is a major contributor to smog and is linked to a variety of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) has criticized the state for fast-tracking the permit without a comprehensive impact study.
As xAI continues its expansion in the “Digital Delta” with the $20 billion Macrohardrr project, the community’s resistance shows no signs of fading. The ongoing legal battle led by the NAACP will be a critical test for environmental justice in the region. The tension between high-tech economic development and local quality of life remains a central theme in Southaven.
