Sheinbaum Strengthens US-Mexico Security Ties in Revitalized Partnership

Under President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico is strengthening its security collaboration with the United States, a move that represents a notable shift from the previous administration led by Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Omar García Harfuch, the coordinator of Mexico’s Security Cabinet, has become a pivotal figure in this renewed partnership. He has engaged in several discussions with senior US officials, focusing on intelligence sharing and combating organized crime. Mexican authorities have highlighted that the quicker exchange of information has enabled them to respond more effectively to criminal activities.

This enhanced cooperation has resulted in significant achievements for Mexican law enforcement, including the arrest of tens of thousands of suspects, major drug and weapons seizures, and the dismantling of thousands of clandestine drug labs. Additionally, there has been an acceleration in the extradition of high-profile criminal suspects to the United States, coupled with a reported decline in fentanyl trafficking. These developments mark a departure from the approach taken by the López Obrador administration, which had previously closed a US intelligence unit operating in Mexico and imposed stricter regulations on foreign security agents.

The cooperation between the two countries had been strained further following the 2020 arrest of former Defense Minister Salvador Cienfuegos and disagreements over investigations into organized crime. Relations hit another low in 2024 after allegations surfaced that drug money had funded López Obrador’s 2006 presidential campaign. Although these allegations never led to formal charges, they severely undermined trust between the Mexican government and US authorities.

Despite the positive steps toward repairing the bilateral relationship, President Sheinbaum continues to emphasize the importance of Mexican sovereignty and mutual respect. Her administration has been vocal in criticizing what it perceives as attempts by US officials to influence Mexico’s security leadership or sow division within it. While the renewed partnership focuses on tackling organized crime, Mexico remains firm that any intelligence cooperation must honor its national interests and sovereignty.
