Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has pledged to ramp up his campaign efforts after trailing behind Flávio Bolsonaro in the initial round of the presidential election. With almost all ballots tallied, Bolsonaro secured approximately 47% of the vote, while Lula garnered about 45%. The two contenders are set to compete in a decisive runoff scheduled for October 25.
Lula characterized the first-round outcome as unexpected and has called on the more than 30 million Brazilians who abstained from voting to make their voices heard in the second round. He has also criticized Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, highlighting issues related to organized crime and corruption, and positioning his own extensive political experience as a reason he is better equipped to govern the nation.
The focus of Lula’s campaign leading up to the runoff will center on key areas such as education, research, technology, and industrial development. He has committed to sustaining investment in universities, federal institutes, and secondary education. Additionally, Lula plans to expand the Pé-de-Meia programme, which aims to reduce school dropout rates.
The upcoming campaign is expected to concentrate on winning over voters who supported candidates ousted in the first round, as well as those who did not participate in the initial election. Both candidates will need to appeal to this broader electorate to secure a victory in the runoff.
