President Donald Trump has called on Mexico to enhance its efforts against drug trafficking, emphasizing the need for more robust measures to disrupt criminal organizations. In a statement sent to Congress, Trump acknowledged the progress under Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration, which has increased drug seizures and dismantled clandestine laboratories.
Despite these efforts, Trump stated that Mexico’s current measures were insufficient and urged the government to intensify actions against drug-trafficking organizations and their financial networks. He also highlighted the importance of identifying and prosecuting public officials allegedly involved in supporting these criminal groups.
Mexico, alongside Canada and several other countries, was identified by the U.S. government as a major transit or producer of illicit drugs. The list also includes several Central American and Caribbean nations such as Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Belize, which are considered part of international drug-trafficking routes.
Trump stressed that stronger enforcement was essential to address the widespread operations of drug organizations across large areas of Mexican territory. The U.S. president’s call for action underscores the ongoing challenges in curbing the flow of illegal drugs into the United States.
