Mexico and the United States are advancing in their efforts to forge a new trade agreement, according to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. This development follows her recent conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump, as reported on Friday.
In a call held on Wednesday, Sheinbaum and Trump discussed ongoing trade negotiations, with the Mexican president describing the dialogue as productive. However, she emphasized that the discussions have not yet culminated in a finalized agreement. The talks are part of a broader negotiation process involving the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), particularly focusing on tariffs related to Mexican automobiles, steel, and aluminum.
Sheinbaum noted that her interactions with President Trump have been frequent, having spoken with him 22 times since the beginning of 2025. She stated that these conversations are generally disclosed to the public once concrete agreements are achieved. The latest discussion, she clarified, was centered solely on trade matters, deliberately excluding topics like security and drug trafficking, which are managed separately in the bilateral relationship.
As both nations continue their dialogue, the aim remains to address and resolve the outstanding trade issues. The progress in these talks is significant as they work towards a comprehensive agreement that could impact several key industries.
