Mexico is experiencing a revitalized period of cultural and diplomatic cooperation with Spain and France, marking a shift from the tensions of previous administrations. Under the leadership of President Claudia Sheinbaum, the Mexican government has emphasized cultural diplomacy as a means to strengthen these international relationships.
During the tenure of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, relations with Spain were strained, largely due to his calls for Spain to acknowledge historical abuses during the conquest of Mexico. However, President Sheinbaum’s administration has eased these tensions through cultural exchanges and initiatives, facilitating renewed diplomatic engagement. Notably, Spain has recognized Mexican talent by honoring photographer Graciela Iturbide and the National Museum of Anthropology. In return, Mexico loaned over 400 pre-Hispanic artifacts for exhibitions in Madrid.
Similarly, Mexico’s relationship with France has improved following previous conflicts, such as those surrounding the Florence Cassez case during the administrations of Felipe Calderón and Nicolas Sarkozy. Under the current leadership of Sheinbaum and French President Emmanuel Macron, both countries have pursued strengthened cultural ties. As part of these efforts, France recently loaned the Azcatitlan Codex to Mexico to commemorate the 200th anniversary of diplomatic relations. This historic manuscript, which details the history and migration of pre-Hispanic peoples, is set to be displayed at Mexico’s National Museum of Anthropology and History.
These cultural exchanges and the return or loan of historic artifacts are seen by Mexican officials as crucial components of cultural diplomacy, helping to create space for renewed diplomatic engagement and mutual respect. The initiatives underscore Mexico’s commitment to fostering international relationships through shared cultural heritage and understanding.
