Rescue Teams from US, Mexico, Brazil Respond to Venezuela Quake; 1,400 Dead

The death toll from the catastrophic earthquakes that hit northern Venezuela has exceeded 1,400, with rescue efforts intensifying as emergency teams search for survivors amidst the debris. The seismic events, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck the regions of La Guaira and Caracas on Wednesday evening, leaving a trail of destruction. Venezuelan officials report that at least 1,430 individuals have died, around 3,200 are wounded, and more than 3,100 have become homeless due to the disaster.

Amid the devastation, thousands are still missing, with nearly 68,900 individuals unaccounted for according to reports from their families. On the ground, rescuers and local residents are tirelessly digging through the wreckage, using everything from heavy machinery to their bare hands. A glimmer of hope emerged when an 11-year-old boy was pulled alive from the rubble in Caraballeda, offering a rare moment of relief in the ongoing crisis.

The United Nations has estimated that the financial impact of the earthquakes reaches approximately $6.7 billion, which represents nearly 6% of Venezuela’s GDP. This figure primarily accounts for damage to housing and infrastructure, while wider economic repercussions are yet to be fully assessed. In response to the calamity, international aid has started to arrive, with rescue teams and emergency supplies being sent from the United States, Mexico, Brazil, France, the Netherlands, Türkiye, and the United Kingdom. The US has pledged to assist with coordinating flights, providing medical aid, and supporting search-and-rescue operations.

To bolster the relief efforts and maintain security, over 14,000 military and police personnel have been dispatched to the affected areas. However, officials caution that access to some locations remains difficult due to safety concerns and infrastructure damage. The urgency of the situation is underscored by experts who emphasize that time is of the essence in locating those trapped beneath the collapsed structures. International bodies, including the United Nations and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, are calling for sustained global support to help Venezuela navigate one of its most severe humanitarian crises in recent history.
